The famous song by “No Doubt I’m just a girl”represents the trouble of being girl back in the 90s when the internet was first created.
“Take this pink ribbon off my eyes I'm exposed, and it's no big surprise” this line refers to the point in time where women were expected to obey their husbands to have children and to handle the house. Looks were also a big part of living up to the expectations of society.
“Don't you think I know exactly where I stand? This world is forcing me to hold your hand” this refers to the expectation society had of women back then. Most of the time women didn't want to marry and amount to something other than another housewife.
Does this apply to Modern times?
The answer is yes and no. In all truth you can never really know. In some aspects of life. Yes, it is true. There is still some gender inequality. Many may think that girls and boys are being treated equally and that I am making a fuss out of nothing. And to those people who think so, there is a fair chance that you are right. And there's a fair chance that you're wrong. Now I want you all to think how many times a global superpower has been led by a woman. Not that many.
Now I’m not saying that that’s the only reason. But I can't say that's not part of the reason.
What does the band say have to say about the song ?
Gwen Stefani (Singer)
“I can remember thinking, ‘Wow, I’m in the car right now, I’m driving home, it’s like one in the morning and if something did happen to me, I’m vulnerable because I’m a girl,’ Gwen Stefani said in an interview.
Gwen Stefani was inspired to write the song “I’m just a girl” by personal experiences, one of them being her father's fears of her driving late at night. This showcased her vulnerability as a woman or just a girl in the world.
Eric Stefani (Keyboards, Guitar)
"Gwen had this idea for a song about being a girl... She wrote the lyrics and brought them to me... I think we both felt like we were trying to make a statement about girls being more than just beauty objects or whatever." Eric Stefani said in an interview in 1995.
In other interviews Eric had said that it was also said that the chorus of the song was inspired by him growing up in a family with three sisters.
Tony Kanal (Bass)
"We were all going through this really intense time... We were all dealing with our own personal struggles, and 'I'm Just a Girl' was one of those songs that came out of that."
Tony implies that the song was one of the hard things of being a young adult in the 90’s one of the problems being sexism.
Adrian Young (Drums)
"'I'm Just a Girl' is one of those songs that's always been special to me... It's one of those songs that you can play live, and it always gets the crowd going."
Adrian also mentioned the fact that the song is timeless and that always gets the crowd going, it is a funky original song thats sends a message so clearly and beautifully it resonates with fans still today.
