Ramadan is associated mostly with the fasting that Muslims do during this month, which involves abstaining from water and food from sunrise to sundown. This fasting is one to the five pillars or basic institutions of Islam, which these being prayer, charity, pilgrimage and affirmation of faith.

This holy month is one of spiritual cleansing, as Muslims must abstain not just from food and water, but also from anger, gossiping, and all forms of materialism, with a purpose to remind oneself of the blessings we may take for granted as well as to allow for a deeper reflection into one’s interior self, and cultivate humility, gratitude, piety, and peace.
Some ground rules all Muslims must follow for these 30 days are:
No swearing or arguing

Fasting unless a valid reason for not doing so exists
Giving charity
Dedicating more time to spiritual growth
