Time management tips to stay consistent during the school year

School started less than a month ago, and deadlines are already started piling up. In the following article I have included 5 low maintenance time management tips to help you stay consistent throughout the year.

1. Prioritize

Not every task requires the same amount of time and focus. Prioritize tests, summative deadlines, and sports. Once those are marked down in your calendar, you’ll know how much time you have left for other activities.

2. Build a Weekly Schedule

Use a physical planner, Google Calendar or notion to time-block school, school work, sports, and more. Then, see where you can fit in social activities and free time. You can also color code, for example blue for school, green for summative assessments and deadlines, yellow for friends. So, you can see how to balance your schedule, at a glance.

3. Use Small Pockets of Time

You don’t always need a whole day to get things done. Review vocabulary for languages on the bus, finish math exercises before practice, or review 10 minutes each night for a science test the week before. These small study sessions add up and keep you staying balanced and less stressed.

4. Time-blocking

Time blocking is assigning specific times of your day to different tasks so you know nothing gets overlooked and you don’t focus or waste too much time on a single task. Sticking to these blocks keeps you productive and reduces stress.

5. Rest

Everyone needs sleep and downtime. Ensure you get at least 7-8 hours of sleep. Studies show an extra hour of sleep is often more beneficial than an extra hour of studying (BBC, 2019).

Good luck to everyone for the rest of the year - hopefully these tips help you out to make school exciting and not a chore!
