The U.S. Presidential Elections

ree

(New York Times, 2024)

This November of 2024 is when the US’s presidential election begins again.

The nation is divided into two parties, the democrats and the republicans. Each party chooses a representative to endorse for the Presidential elections. They decide the candidate to endorse based on what are called state caucuses/primaries. This means in each state representatives from the same party (Democratic or Republican) participate in polls to see which representative is the most attractive to the public. Based on these results the respective parties chose their candidate for the main elections in November. Each state holds these polls at different times. Based on this, the elections in November are usually a face-off between two candidates endorsed by each party and through the electoral college the President is then elected.

We have already experienced major upsets in the lead up to the primaries as two states, Colorado, and Maine, have decided to bar former President Donald Trump from being included on the ballot. Both of these state high courts have reviewed his case and have ruled that he is guilty of becoming involved and inciting an insurrection, the January 6th, 2021, attack on the Capitol building. As these two states have excluded him from their primaries this calls back to the Supreme Court and they will then decide whether this movement is justified. This could create a chain reaction; other states could follow the example of these two states. Which means Donald Trump cannot re – run for President. Mr.

Trump has faced several felonies, subpoenas, appeals, and even arrests over the past couple of years. And yet, he still has a chance at becoming President.

However, the caucuses in Iowa begin today, January 15th, and through pre – polling it seems that Donald Trump is the frontrunner in their caucus. Update Following the results of the caucus in Iowa, Trump is the frontrunner. He won the vote by more than 51% of the population. Coming in second was Ron DeSantis with 21.2% of the population vote.

Trump remains ever popular. Much of this is due to his very loyal following of republicans. And due to the electoral college even if a candidate won the popular vote, this does not mean they necessarily become the President.

So, will Donald Trump remain the representative of the Republican party?

This election in November will be one that is watched around the world. After the tumultuous and unlawful administration of former President Donald Trump, it would be concerning to see him back in office. Currently, the US is engaged with tensions all around the world. From the two wars; Ukraine and Gaza, to tensions rising between China and the US.

The current president, Joe Biden, is currently up for re – election but much of the US’ population has felt unsatisfied with his administration. This may cause him to lose the election in November. That raises the question of whether or not the democratic party should shift their focus and endorsement of candidates to someone else who may garner more support from the public.

If Trump is re – elected this could cause major repercussions with the war in Ukraine, as beforehand Trump had a close relationship with Russia’s president Vladimir Putin. This could completely change the course of the war and could see the potential loss of Ukraine to Russia.

Following the insurrection of January 6th in 2021 the position of democracy in the US is very precarious. The US, once seen as a global superpower, is now a country that’s politics are currently burning the country from inside out.

This election will be incredibly important to the population of the US but also for many other countries all around the world. We are currently in a very dangerous position, and one must wonder what repercussions will come about following the election.
