The introduction of the orange card to football

It is any footballer’s nightmare to receive a yellow, or a red card... but would they expect to receive an orange card?! 

Football (AKA Soccer.) It is the world’s most played sport, with 240 million people who play it worldwide, and over 4 billion fans! If you make a bad foul, you can receive a yellow card, but if it is a very bad foul, you will get suspended for the rest of the game (and the next one), you will get a red card. 

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has been discussing whether or not to add the orange card to the game. The Telegraph says that this new rule could debut in the Premier League as early as next season! 

An orange card is worse than a simple yellow card foul, but not as severe as a red card. If you receive an orange card, you will be temporarily suspended from the game for the duration of ten minutes. 

The IFAB wants to implement this rule to make players not commit fouls (for example tactical fouls) and if they do, they can reflect on their actions. 

Recently football has been through some major changes, such as the change of the number of subs in a game from three to five (2021-2022 season). Or the VAR (video assistant referee) (tested in 2016 but first used in major leagues in 2019-20 season). This new change will make the great game, even mightier, and intriguing.  

Noah Akhtar an OIS student who pays football says: I don’t think it is needed I think yellow, and red is enough, it is copying rugby.” in rugby the yellow card is 10 minutes off.
