Morrocco Earthquake

ree

On September 10th this year there was an earthquake in Morrocco centred on the High Atlas Mountain range. The death toll currently stands at over two thousand, and thousands more are injured.

This 6.8 magnitude earthquake (stronger than the Hiroshima explosion from 10 km away) is the largest there has been in North Africa for 120 years! There is some major damage in Moroccan cities.

The last major earthquake that hit Morocco was in 2004 with a magnitude on 6.3. the main reason they have so many earthquakes is because they are between tectonic plates.

The king (Mohamed VI) ordered for the people to be given blankets and food. Many Moroccans are sleeping on the streets afraid ofstaying inside, or having lost their houses.

The death toll probably will not go up by a lot. 2000 people is a large death toll for an earthquake nowadays. Many people are hoping for the death toll not to rise, and king Mohamed IV ordered for there to be 3 days of mourning.
