Don’t Look Up is a new movie by Adam McKay that talks about two astronomers, Dr Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) who have to go on a media tour to warn the planet about a giant comet that is charging straight at the globe and will destroy it.
The story is about a comet that is about to hit planet Earth but it is mostly satirizing society. It’s about how social media has a lot of influence and can modify something tragic into a meme, how truth-deniers can be arguing while the world is ending and how some politicians only care about their own interests.
In the view of others, the characters represent real people in our everyday lives, for example people think that Peter Isherwell, a tech company CEO resembles, Elon Musk and Mark Zuckenberg because he started off as a charming genius, but as the movie goes on, you well see how he prioritized money over the destruction of the globe or how he created a phone that can know everything, even the cause of your death. Another character is Riley Mina, whose role is basically herself, Ariana Grande. In the movie, Riley is a pop star whose relationship drama made the headlines above the destruction of earth, as we know Grande’s past relationships have also been on the news however, she is a lot more politically active than we think and has fought for many rights; voting participation, LGBTQ+, Black Lives Matter movement and many more.
There were a bunch of negative comments, saying how it was an overcast, it was unfunny and too long. Many people can strongly disagree and loved it but some people thought it was more sadness than satire as this is what’s happening in our everyday lives.
