Different type of stones

The world has to offer us multiple interesting resources. Some main ones that we require for living is food such as wheat, rye and of course, water. Humanity has started off with the stone age, slowly moving forward with signs of evolution and civilisation. However, I am here to talk about the different types of stones that are in the world, but before we start, what exactly are stones?

Stones are the most basic material known to humankind, using them for many useful jobs such as chopping down trees for wood, and eventually later discovering fire. Stone is categorised as a solid, non-metallic mineral of which rocks are made of. It was (and is still) used as a building material, and unlike wood, doesn’t burn. That is why later on, in the medieval ages, the walls that surrounded the castle(s) were changed from wood to stone, so that they don’t catch fire. Stones have been a key part of our lives and still are now in specific places.

If you have looked around, there are many stones, and many of them are different. Today I would like to talk about one of the most beautiful stones you can encounter, and they are not rare in particular.

The main types of stones can be put into 4 categories:

- Igneous

- Sedimentary

- Metamorphic

- Geodes

If you through a stone into water, it will drown, however the igneous stones won’t. They come from the volcanoes when they erupt and then cool down to make these stones. They are aesthetically cool-looking (insert other word instead of “Cool-looking”) and it is very light, so if you think about throwing it in water, it won’t drown.

Sedimentary rocks are formed as a result of the slow accumulation on the surface of the earth of various materials: Fragments of more ancient rocks, plant remnants and more. Sedimentary rocks include, for example, clay, limestone and sandstone.

Metamorphic stones, like quartz, marble and slate are formed from sedimentary stones or igneous rocks in the deepest part of the Earth, under the influence of the high temperatures and pressure.

Geodes are arguably the most beautiful stones on Earth. Sometimes, closed voids are formed inside the rocks. They are called geodes. These captivities are completely or partially filled with beautiful sparkling minerals.
