As Black History Month progresses, art exhibitions are globally presenting impactful tributes to the heritage and contributions of black artists. From modern works examining  the different African cultures to historical looks at Black resistance, offering a chance to connect with Black history in a profoundly visual and emotional manner. 

 

Orlando’s Art Exhibition for Black History Month 

A notable exhibition this year is occurring in Orlando, Florida, where the Terrace Gallery at City Hall is showcasing an art show with 32 local artists. Focused on the theme "African Americans and Labor," the exhibit showcases the resilience, ingenuity, and challenges faced by Black workers throughout history. Taking place from January 31 to March 30, 2025, this complimentary event provides an uplifting perspective on labor movements and their cultural importance.

Theaster Gates: Miraculous Energy 

In Richmond, Virginia, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts showcases an impressive collection of ceramic pieces by Theaster Gates, a Chicago artist whose creations are profoundly influenced by Black cultural heritage and community change. Running until March 9, 2025, this exhibit highlights Gates' talent in merging art with activism, contemplating Black labour and spirituality. 

 

Noah Davis Exhibition at the Barbican 

Across the ocean, the Barbican Art Gallery in London is paying tribute to the deceased American artist Noah Davis through a retrospective featuring more than 50 of his pieces. Taking place from February 6 to May 11, 2025, this exhibition showcases Davis' talent for portraying African American life with a surreal touch, crafting works that intertwine reality and fantasy 

 

Britain’s Commemoration in the Fitzwilliam Museum 

For individuals curious about the history of Black resistance, the Fitzwilliam Museum located in Cambridge, UK, is presenting "Rise Up: Resistance, Revolution, and Abolition." This exhibit explores the transatlantic slave trade, showcasing artworks and historical items that emphasize Black resistance movements. The exhibition extends until June 1, 2025, providing a compelling and insightful examination of abolition and activism. 

 

Black Paris: 1950 to 2000 

In Paris, the Pompidou Centre is honouring Black artists through its exhibit "Black Paris: 1950–2000," taking place from March 19 to June 30, 2025. Showcasing creations from 150 Black artists, this exhibition examines the influence of African and Caribbean artists on the Paris art landscape, offering glimpses into their challenges and successes across fifty years.
