In today's fast paced technology industry, advertising has gone through an impressive transformation. It is only logical that computer-generated advertising becomes the next trend. In this article we set out to answer the question, “will AI take over advertising and if so, how? Is this a good or a bad thing?”
One of the ways AI is taking over in advertising is by generating virtual models which can be edited to use various products or to look differently, depending on the region where they are being sold. Computer-generated models have already been used in movies and video games and have proven to be effective, reliable, and easy to use. The cost of advertising is also a problem that AI can help solve. By having 3D models, the need for models and expensive cameras and lighting is eliminated, while also providing a better-quality image than conventional advertising. This cut in costs will allow smaller businesses to have better advertising without having to pay the conventional premium.
If this all sounds too good to be true, that is because it has its own extensive list of cons.
Ethical considerations have also halted the progress of AI in advertising quite a bit, as of 2023 over 2 million people (about twice the population of Lisbon) were employed in the worldwide advertising industry, and in addition, 13,500 fashion models were employed in 2023. This is a substantial number of people that may lose their jobs with impacts well beyond the advertising industry.
Overall, AI has the potential to revolutionize the future of advertising and businesses and while doing so, also affecting millions of people's lives.
